Everyone wishing to enter the school is required to undertake some form of assessment.
Nursery
An assessment with play activities is used to determine whether the child is ready to benefit from the learning programme offered.
Junior School
In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 assessment is by play, informal activities and unstructured tasks.
Year 3
Candidates sit entrance papers in Mathematics, English and non-verbal reasoning.
Year 7
External candidates take entrance papers in Mathematics and English. All candidates being considered for a place are then interviewed. Pupils in Howell's Junior School are not required to sit the examination unless they wish to be considered for a scholarship.
Year 8-11
Candidates take entrance examinations in Mathematics and English. On successful completion of the written papers, interviews are held with the Principal to assess communication skills and the ability to take advantage of all the school offers.
The Sixth Form College
Places are available for both boys and girls with the appropriate qualifications at GCSE. It is expected that students will achieve a range of at least six good grades at GCSE with an A*, A or B in the subjects they wish to take at AS/A2 level. We are used to our students achieving very good results, often the best in Wales. Almost all our students go on to Higher Education.
