Howell’s School is proud of its exceptional modern educational facilities in buildings of character and as part of our links to the local area.
Functions
We make our superb facilities available to the community for such events as:
- Weddings
- Conferences/meetings
- Receptions
Our facilities are also used during the school holidays by King's Sports camps and at weekends by The Saturday Circle (Children’s Language Group), Speech and Drama and The Suzuki Piano School.
Howell's as a Filming Location
Over the past couple of years, Cardiff has been the location for landmark shows such as His Dark Materials and Sex Education and A Discovery Of Witches, and Howell’s is in high demand from location managers who fall for the school’s Victorian Gothic architecture, the stunning wood panelled Great Hall and the Edwardian glamour of Hazelwood, Oaklands and Bryn-Taf. Netflix, S4C and Sky are filming dramas at Howell’s in 2021, and we welcome further enquires.

Facilities for hire include:
Indoor Swimming Pool
Perfect for swimming lessons, aqua aerobics, diving, life guard training and swimming clubs. We also run Stay and Swim sessions which extends a warm welcome to the very youngest members of our community and their families on a weekly basis. For more information on Stay and Swim please click here.
The Great Hall
The splendid Great Hall is probably the grandest of our facilities and provides a wonderful venue for dinners, receptions, conferences, weddings, concerts and charity events. The Great Hall was built in 1900 and features magnificent murals of Shakespearean scenes by J M Staniforth and a fabulous Danish oak floor. The Great Hall can be configured into many different setups to tailor to your event. We would be happy to discuss these with you.
Day Room
The Day Room doubles up as a fantastic gallery and reception space with its high ceilings and access to a marvellous courtyard.
Sports Hall
The Sports Hall was opened in 1997 by Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson and includes an upper storey with male and female changing facilities. We are able to cater for all sorts of sports and exercise events such as Badminton, Basketball, Netball and Indoor Athletics. The Sports Hall is used by a number of local clubs throughout the weekday evenings. Not only a wonderful setting for all sport and exercise related activity, the Sports Hall can be used for a huge range of other purposes such as award ceremonies, shows and concerts.
Library
The Library is a great space at Howell’s that can be used all for kinds of events as it has been designed with mobile, easy to move book shelves.
Prep School Hall
The Prep School Hall is a medium sized space which can seat up to 150 people and can be configured into various different setups for your event. The Prep School Hall has a sound rig and access to the Prep School play area.
Octagon
The Music Recital Hall, known as the Octagon is a lovely intimate performance space with excellent acoustics ideal for chamber music activities and recitals. The Octagon is housed in Cumberland Lodge, the childhood home of Roald Dahl, who lived there from 1921 to 1927.
Music Practice Rooms
Our Music Wing is an ideal for teaching space for teaching individual students and small music groups. Each practice room is equipped with a piano, mirror and is sound proofed.
The Hub@Howell's
The hub@Howell's is an incredibly versatile L-shaped facility suitable for seminars and presentations, as well as gentle exercise classes and small community groups. The bright and airy meeting space has bi-fold doors that open onto the enclosed courtyard with its bistro furniture. The break-out café area includes a finishing kitchen, with high spec coffee machine, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. The hub@Howell's is fully wheelchair accessible, with an accessible toilet and baby changing facilities.
