NETBALL

On Tuesday 7th March, Year 10 played in their rearranged tournament from the end of last term. They players had a great game against Radyr Comprehensive School with high intensity in the first half against the seeded team. At half time they were drawing, but Radyr made some key interceptions and pulled away to win the second half. They also played Ysgol Plasmawr, and we saw some wonderful defensive play by Aya, Tahlia and Alice and superb shooting by Megan and Mali, before the match ended in a draw. Howell’s came second overall.

The Year 7 Netball team played their county tournament at Howell’s, so we hoped to have the home advantage. All games had great elements of defending and attacking, and out of the five teams, Howell’s came 3rd. Corpus had an extremely talented player at GA and Howell’s narrowly missed out on two goals against Bro Edern. Well done to all girls that played.

BADMINTON

South Wales Badminton Tournament

Two teams from Howell’s, U.13 and U.15, took part in the South Wales Badminton Competition. The tournament was a combined event run jointly by Cardiff Games and the 5x60 initiative. This event was aimed at students who are novice players, with the hope of encouraging them into local Badminton clubs.

This was the first time we had entered this competition, so we were unsure what to expect. The girls were put under immense pressure in their games and they had to think about their tactical play. We are very pleased to reveal that both the U.13s and U.15s won all their matches and were the South Wales winners in both age groups.

HOCKEY

On Monday 6th March, Year 8 took part in a hockey tournament hosted by Stanwell School, Penarth on their new Astro turf hockey pitch. The girls played two matches with the first against Cowbridge and the second against Stanwell.

The girls played a well- controlled game against Cowbridge, with Fiona B scoring a goal in the second half to give us a 1-0 lead. Howell’s continued to defend well and finally broke away allowing Millie C to score a second goal. The final score was 2-0 to Howell’s

In the match against Stanwell, the girls continued to play well and had several chances to score that did not work out. The score at half time was 0-0. Sadly Annie L got injured and had to retire from the game, and Stanwell seized the opportunity and raced into a 2-0 lead just into the second half. They continued their pressure and the final score was Stanwell 4 Howell’s 0.

It was disappointing that the girls did not qualify for the next round, but they should be praised for displaying some of the best hockey they have played this year. Well done girls.
