Year 5 students shine at ESU Primary Schools’ Public Speaking Competition

Following last week’s workshop on public speaking, we welcomed back local primary school children to compete in the fourth English Speaking Union Primary Schools’ Public Speaking Competition on the evening of Wednesday 2nd March. Three students from each school formed a team comprising a Chair, Speaker and Questioner, who presented on a topic which had been given to them during the workshop.   We were delighted to welcome Derek Morgan, Jeanne Harvey and Marjorie Page from the English Speaking Union, who had the unenviable task of judging the competition. The winning team for the third year in a row was Kitchener Primary School, who discussed the topic Public transport should be free for all. In second place was Marlborough Primary School who were taking part for the  first time and we very much hope they will join us again. Marlborough’s topic was Animal testing should be completely banned. Third place went to the team from Howell’s who discussed the topic We should build more tall buildings in town centres. Congratulations to all the children who took part, who presented brilliantly and were a real credit to their schools. A very big thank you to the ESU for sponsoring the event and for judging the competition. Thank you very much to the parents, staff, friends and ESU members who came and supported what was a fantastic evening.
