Sports News

Howell’s Senior Tennis Team played in the regional final of the National Team Championships on Wednesday 8th June. It was a great afternoon of high level tennis matches at Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club with Sophie S (Year 8), Alicia L (Year 8), Poppy D (Year 13) and Ismay B (Year 13). All girls played excellent matches against higher rated players, with Alicia winning her singles match in three sets. The girls went on to lose their doubles matches against superb opposition but played exceptionally well, and did very well to reach the regional finals. Well done to all the girls!

Congratulations to Lily R, Annabelle W and Alicia L (Year 8) who have been selected to compete in Gemau Cymru 2016. Gemau Cymru is a multi-sport event for the young athletes of Wales. This year it is held on the weekend of 1st – 3rd July 2016 in different locations around Cardiff. It captures the inspiration of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and will deliver a lasting sports legacy for Wales. The girls will be competing in hockey on 2nd July at the National Sports Centre for Wales.

Congratulations to sisters Holly B and Fiona B, who competed in the Cardiff Junior Triathlon on Saturday 11th June.  Holly (Year 9) came 2nd in the Youth category (U16) and Fiona (Year 7) came 3rd in Tristars 3 (U14).  These were excellent results for both girls, given that they are currently at the youngest end of their two-year age bands.  Well done, girls!

We wish the best of luck to our Sports Scholar Jack B in his upcoming Cycling Event, The Ras de Cymru. The event is regarded as one of the toughest and most prestigious amateur races in the UK, just over 100 rides take part in the race every year. It consists of roughly 250 miles of racing over five days in the form of six stages on the roads around South Wales. The field is mainly made up of adults as well as a dozen or so junior competitors like Jack. He took part in the race last year and, despite being the youngest ride in the race, achieved 18th place overall. Jack has been fortunate enough to be offered the chance to be a guest rider for the Cardiff Ajax CC team this year! We look forward to seeing how he gets on this year.
