Esther and Jasneet win first prize in engineering competition

Congratulations to Esther P and Jasneet D in Year 9 who have won first prize in the National Women in Engineering Day "Herstories Magnificent Women" Competition.  It was run by the Women's Engineering Society and was open to 14-16 year olds. The challenge was to research lesser known female engineers and tell their stories. Well done, girls!

Esther and I began this competition in a Physics lesson to celebrate National Women in Engineering Day.  There were many famous women we were interested in researching and one of them was Claudia Parsons; the first woman to circumnavigate the world by car.  However, we realised that she needed more recognition when we researched her.  Once we entered our PowerPoint into the Engineering HerStories: Magnificent Women competition, we were quickly notified that we had won first prize.  The prize was VIP entrance to the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) as well as having afternoon tea with senior female leaders in the Northrup Grumman hospitality chalet.  In addition, we were given a guided tour of the Northrup Grumman aircraft on static display.

It was the most memorable day I personally have ever experienced and I felt honoured to be there. We were informed about the new, unbelievable inventions which were breath-taking to hear about.  The James Webb Space telescope, which will be able to look further back in time to find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe was by far the most amazing invention I heard about on the day.  We saw a Belgian Airbus that was used in WW2, and watched the famous air show of the British Red Arrows.

Overall it was a prestigious day and I felt very privileged to be there.  We were thankful to have an opportunity like this and were so happy to be winners!
