SPORTS NEWS 15th Sept 2016

FENCING

Louise S (Year 11) has been selected as the first reserve for the Welsh Fencing Team for the Five Nations Competition in November. This is an amazing achievement as Louise will be supporting the adult team!

 

 

 

 

 

TENNIS

Congratulations to Rebecca D (Year 7), who has been invited to join the SW UK Regional Tennis Squad at Bath University! 

CLIMBING

Sisters Sanaa M (Year 10) and Isra M (Year 7) have achieved their NICAS Stages 1&2 for Climbing. Well done, girls! 

RIDING

Over the summer, Trinity (Year 7) and Taz (the pony) won numerous rosettes for unaffiliated Show Jumping competitions. These included winning the Bolster Stakes at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre in Gloucestershire; winning at Sunnybank in Caerphilly and gaining three qualifying places for the Spring Show at the David Broome Event Centre, Chepstow. Trinity is now preparing to join BSJA and begin the winter season jumping more complex rounds, starting in Pencoed next month. Trinity has only been riding for 18 months, so it is quite an achievement, well done!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

DANCE

After travelling to Guildford, Surrey at the weekend to compete in the Strictly Vibez Super Dance Open Series, Jasmine W (Year 7) and her partner won the All Girls Latin American 4 Dance (ChaChaCha, Rumba, Samba & Jive). They competed against 36 other couples and the standard was extremely high, especially for the final top 6! Well done Jasmine!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Amani K-A (Year 10) was selected by Rubicon Dance Studio from an audition workshop organised by Miss Batchelor at Howell’s in Year 7. She has danced regularly in the contemporary groups for over 2 years and to date has taken part in several performances including the 4th July on their 40th anniversary. During her time in the Young Nubrico group she has been spotted for the Junior Nuworks as she has been complemented in her ability to blend hip hop with contemporary style. Well done, Amani! 

Maya W (Year 7) auditioned during the summer and has been offered a place at the Bristol Dance Associates for Ballet and Contemporary Dance to complement her current ballet classes.

HOCKEY

Congratulations to Ffion H (Year 10), who has been selected for the Wales National Age Group, U16 Hockey Squad.

Katie G, Nia H, Alicia L, Sophie S, Annabelle W, Lily R, Sophie G (Year 9) 

TAE KWON DO

Congratulations to Tahlia M-R (Year 11). Through sheer hard work, determination and training up to five times a week, she is now going to be taking her black belt in Tae Kwon Do in October. She has twice been selected for training in the Netherlands with UTIC, since she started Tae Kwon Do two years ago. An amazing achievement!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

NETBALL

Congratulations to Annie E (Year 12) who attended Welsh Netball trials last weekend. Annie was selected for the U17 Welsh Netball Squad. Well done! 

Maya W (Year 7) completed the muddy 5k race for life on Saturday and raised £200 for cancer research.  Well done! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SWIMMING

Congratulations to Claudia M (Year 11), who has been selected for the Welsh Youth Development Squad in Swimming. Claudia will be looking to target the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas next July!

 

 

 

 

 

CROSS COUNTRY

On Tuesday 13th September, 19 students from Year 7 to 12 competed in the first Cross Country race of the year at Bryn Hafren. All the girls ran exceptionally well. Caitlin E (Year 7) finished 37th in the Year 7 race. In the Year 8 and 9 race, Fiona B (Year 8) finished an outstanding 5th, Sophie S (Year 9) came in 14th and Zoe H (Year 8) finished 27th. In the Senior race (Year 10 to 13), Holly B (Year 10) finished in an excellent 8th place. Well done to all those who competed. The Year 7 competitors were Megan G, Elan J, Sukie W, Caitlin E. The Year 8 runners were Zoe H, Fiona B, Fiona W, Emma S, Katie G, Freya M, Millie C, Sophie S. In the Senior Race were Lowri E and Holly B (Year 10), Louise S (Year 11) and Megan C (Year 12).

MARTIAL ARTS

On 21st-24th July, Rhian F (Year 11) took part in the World Organisation of Martial Arts World Games. She fought in four different categories, including one which she took part in 'just for fun and the experience', surprising herself by winning the gold medal. Over the course of the weekend, Rhian cleaned up, adding to her collection of World Titles and going home with a further three gold medals and one silver. Well done Rhian, we are all very proud of you!

 

 

 

 

 

CRICKET

This summer, Zoe H (Year 8) had a great season with Radyr Cricket Club. Zoe played for the U13 Red Team, who finished 3rd in their league. She played for the Golds in one of their final matches and took two wickets! She has continued to train and play friendly matches with the girls at the National Development Centre, and will hopefully get the chance to trial for the Welsh team later on this year. Zoe was also part of the guard of honour, for the quarter final of the T20 at the SWALEC Stadium. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CHESS

Susanna F (Year 7) was one of five children selected to represent Wales in the European Union Chess Championships in Mureck, Austria, from the 3rd to 11th August 2016.  Susanna competed in the Under 12 combined (male and female) section and came 5th highest placed girl, for which she was awarded a Certificate at the Closing Ceremony, and 17th overall.  This was an absolutely tremendous result in a very tough competition where only the very best players from each country were selected!
