The Senior Choir were honoured to sing for HRH The Earl of Wessex yesterday morning.
A flash-mob choir of students, aged between 14 and 18, led by Katie J., Emily E. and Rebecca P. in Year 12 serenaded the Earl as he arrived at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. The choir was brilliantly accompanied by Mr Simon Shewring and performed 'We are the Young', 'Something Inside So Strong' and 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. His Royal Highness was in Wales to attend a public performance by local schools, which forms part of the festivities for the Diamond Anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
The students were thrilled to have the opportunity to chat with His Royal Highness, and they even formed a 60-strong guard of honour to escort him once the performance was over. Fifty-five of the girls who took part are current or former DofE participants, and they were all very keen to tell His Royal Highness how much they have enjoyed taking part in the award, which was set up by his father, HRH The Duke Of Edinburgh, in 1956.
During its Diamond Anniversary year the DofE will celebrate the achievements of millions of young people across the UK and the world whose lives have been transformed by their DofE experience, thank the hundreds of thousands of volunteers that have made that experience possible and fundraise for the future so the DofE Charity can continue to reach out to more young people.
At 60 years old, the DofE has never been more relevant for young people in Wales, providing a tried and tested framework of activities through which young people gain vital life and work skills. The DofE has set a Diamond Ambition to enable two million young people to take part in the DofE by 2020, 400,000 of whom will be from disadvantaged backgrounds.
