The topic in Year 1 for this term is ‘Into the Woods’ and the class has looked at the book ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler in great depth. During the first week of term they went on a Gruffalo hunt into Howell’s Woods and found a kind Gruffalo that left them Owl ice cream and scrambled snakes to eat!
The week beginning 22nd September they worked hard to bring the story of the Gruffalo to life by using instruments, narrative, song and hand puppets. They decided which instruments should represent each character within the story and which other instruments should be used for travelling and linking the story together. They then practised retelling the story through speaking, acting, playing and singing. The girls who were acting the parts of the animals had a lot of words to remember and they all played their parts with great enthusiasm and retold the story beautifully. They enjoyed retelling the story so much in class that they decided to share it with the Nursery girls and give them a little show of Year 1’s version of the Gruffalo. What a fun afternoon they all had!
