CareerStart Workshop With The GDST

The Careers department started the week with a day of CareerStart events run by Mrs Karen Kimura, Learning and Development Manager at GDST. Sessions were very lively with discussions about the demands on our young future workforce. Year 10 will have their session later this year. Here is some feedback from the students who took part:

"The session was really informative as I learnt that everyone has a different style of learning and each individuals' brain works differently. We looked at the different types of studying,  and tried out an activity designed to see how good your memory was by applying the different ways of learning. We also focussed on identifying the best times of studying and how exercise can help you to work more efficiently."
Sunny W, Year 11

"Year 9 enjoyed a careers talk on Monday providing us with ideas and options for the future and were informed about the variety of jobs evolved with the manufacturing a product. We were given the example of a Mars bar and in groups we tried to determine how many jobs were involved from factory workers to investors and designers. As a year group, we all left the talk feeling enlightened and full of ideas and plans for our futures."
Isabel T-H, Year 9

"On the 7th November Mrs Kimura came to talk to us about our careers in the future. We learnt to apply skills we currently have to possible job choices. We discussed the number of roles there can be in a company for example in the NHS there are accountants and lawyers as well as doctors and nurses. We also learnt the path to success is not a straight and simple one as it forces you keep trying and occasionally start again. We really enjoyed it and learnt a lot."
Eleanor J,  Cheryl Y and  Katie G, Year 8

"Yesterday Year 7 had an inspirational hour with Mrs Kimura about what skills we would need in this ever changing world of work. We discussed lots of jobs that may exist in the future. All were very creative for example: will we be the generation  who loses the skills to write; or will we be able to teleport? Maybe cars won't even need drivers, or perhaps we will exercise in our cars on the way to work. The key idea is to develop our communication skills along with those needed for teamwork and leadership as well as our subject based literacy, numeracy, ICT etc."
Bella M, Year 7
