The European Day of Languages, 26th September, was celebrated in true Howell’s style with the week of 22nd-26th September filled with a packed programme in both the Junior and Senior schools. The focus was ‘Exploring Patagonia – Welsh and Spanish influences’. Our guest speaker from the Urdd presented fascinating assemblies in the Junior and Senior schools and our prefects displayed and judged the Year 6, 7 and 8 competition entries. We were overwhelmed with the high calibre of entries and special congratulations go to Ffion M and Lauren H (Year 8) and Jessica J (Year 7) for their winning entries.
An international menu was available each lunch-time and students were involved in a range of themed activities, including the extremely popular annual multilingual treasure hunt and an Egyptian mask workshop. Language prefects supported the Rotary Interactors in running our annual staff v College netball match in aid of Alalay – a Bolivian charity supporting orphans and street children. The mixed teams of College boys (wearing the girls’ PE attire!) and girls were out-performed by the staff who won 13 goals to 1! It was an exciting, fast-paced competition, with competitors making up with sheer energy and enthusiasm what they lacked in experience and comprehension of the rules of the game! A total of £88.70 was raised for this worthwhile charity.
