Welsh Junior Chess Championships

In a year when these prestigious chess events were organised into Championships and Challengers events, Howell’s pupils recorded their best results ever. We saw two girls - Susanna F. and Venetia S. – being crowned Welsh Champions at U9 and U10, with both girls winning all seven of their games!

At U14 Alyssa W. was 2nd, while Neya G. was 3rd at U11. Shayanna S. not only came 3rd at U12 but was top girl in the U13s. Other notable performances in this tough Championship section included Nayana K. at U8 and Emily W. at U10. Finally – in a performance that raised some eyebrows – 9 year old Venetia took part in the cauldron of the U16 event and came 3rd!

The Challengers section also saw some happy results. At U9 Bindhu D. was one of the top scorers, while a group of girls all new to chess at this level performed admirably. These were Meher D., Naina P., Lily B., Akshainee T., Lucy G. and Elinora J. At U11 both Shermin R. & Ellora M. were excellent performers as usual, as were Ritika K. and Tahlia M.-R. at U13.

These were the best set of results from any school in Wales - very well done to all!
