After a successful qualifying race in Llangrannog back in October, the Howell’s Senior Ski Team found themselves on the dry ski slope in Stoke last weekend, where the best school ski teams in Britain had come to battle it out.
The practice session on the Saturday evening warmed us up nicely and steadied the nerves so we were all excited for the race the following day. Sunday started with warm-up runs and the course inspection, which we skied a couple of times due to the number of tricky gates and a steep start.
Our team consisted of Lucy M (Captain), Jess M and Amelie C. The pressure was on, as we all had to successfully complete both our runs or face team elimination. Getting the balance between a fast time and skiing out of the gates is always a challenge but one I am glad to say we managed when it counted! Our fastest times were then used to rank us against the other schools. Since we had one of the youngest teams there and the level of fierce competition, I am very proud to report Howell’s came 20th overall!
Once again, the British Championships was an amazing experience for all involved and I would like to thank Mrs Sadler for all her help and support.
Howell’s Ski Team are keen to hear from any skiers interested in joining the squad. Cardiff Ski Club runs group and private lessons throughout the year from beginners to advanced skiers or snowboarders and the Cardiff Race Club now trains on a Tuesday and Friday for any enthusiastic racers out there.
