GCSE Results

After two weeks of uncertainty around examination results, staff at Howell’s School, Llandaff GDST are delighted that the GCSE results reflect the exceptional amount of work that has been put in by everyone.

60% of grades were at A* or level 9-8

82% were at A*-A or levels 9-7

In April and May, teachers estimated the grade they expected a student would achieve under normal circumstances, drawing on all the data available from students’ marks through the course, and taking into account the expected trajectory towards the summer exams. These estimated grades were signed off by two subject specialists (including the relevant head of department) before being submitted to the exam boards. Earlier this week, Wales Education Minister Kirsty Williams confirmed that students would be awarded their centre assessed grade or the moderated grade, whichever was higher.

Principal, Sally Davis, said: “It’s been a very challenging year for our GCSE students but they are a bold and brilliant cohort and I know they will go on to achieve great things in the next stage of their education.

In the summer term, our Year 11 girls completed the ARCH programme, a series of bespoke modules designed by Howell’s to bridge the gap between GCSEs and A-Levels. Some of these were on curriculum subjects, some were complementary modules, designed to improve skills of research and independent learning ready for the next stage of their education in September.

The past six months have given them enhanced skills of maturity and resilience; truly, they start Year 12 ready to face any challenge. I am enormously proud of each and every one of them, and I look forward to being there to celebrate everything that they achieve.”
