The hockey season came to an end on Thursday 9th May with the Under 12 National Finals. After successfully navigating the city-wide finals in Whitchurch before the regional finals in Monmouth, Howell's School were one of six teams that made it to the national final in Newtown. The team—Keziah E, Izzy J, Emily T, Olivia T, Carys M, Jess C, Amber P, Alberta G, Lois B, Ana J—started well, defeating Ysgol Y Berwyn (Bala) 1-0. They followed that up with a hard-fought 2-0 win against Bishopston (Swansea), with both goals being scored by Carys M! In what proved to be a very tough yet thrilling third game, the team lost 2-0 to Cardiff & Vale champions Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, who remained unbeaten throughout the day to win the title. A two-goal recovery against Ysgol Bro Dinefwr (Carmarthenshire) salvaged a 2-2 draw, before the girls dropped a very exciting game 1-0 to eventual runners-up Haberdashers Monmouth School for Girls.
This third-placed finish was another very successful tournament in what has been a hugely successful year for the school. The U14 and U18 teams were both runners-up in County Finals (to eventual national champions), whilst the U16 team went one better than the U12s and won their national final back in February. Well done to all players from all year groups of the school for their hard work on the hockey field this year. It has been great to see the progressions being made across all areas of the game. A special congratulations to all of those playing representative hockey for Cardiff & The Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales and Wales.
