On Thursday 27th June, our Year 7 spelling bee finalists travelled up to a very sunny north Wales for the Routes Into Languages Welsh National Spelling Bee Finals. The evening was spent eating noodles and settling into the halls of residence at Bangor University. On Friday, Howell’s was represented by Daisy B and Keziah E (French), Livi L and Zoe B (Welsh) and Ana J and Maryam ML (Spanish). After a fascinating keynote address linking language learning to global conservation by the owner/director of the Anglesey Sea Zoo, the nail-biting heats got underway. The standard of entrants was very high and all of our students worked extremely hard under the time pressure. They had to translate and spell as many words as possible in one minute, using the target language alphabet. We are delighted that Keziah took second place in French, after two nerve wracking tie breaks, and Livi and Zoe took first and second in Welsh. Congratulations to all who participated in the earlier rounds and also to our finalists, and a big thank you to Miss Jones and Frau Sadler for accompanying them.
