Two combined teams from Year 8 and 9 played the first hockey matches of the year on Monday 14th September and Tuesday 15th September at Ysgol Glantaf. To ease Year 8 into the style of play associated with 11-a-side hockey, the girls were merged with Year 9 students to form two Under 14 teams. On Monday, the girls played very well but narrowly lost 2-0 in Game 1. This was bettered in Game 2 on Tuesday, where the girls came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in a thrilling match. The goals were scored by Holly P. (Year 8) and Caitlin W. (Year 9). This early-season series should prove to be very beneficial to the girls as the standard of play was very high – their opponents were County Champions in both the Year 7 and Year 8 competitions last year.
On Tuesday 22nd September, two hockey teams from Year 8 took on Ysgol Plasmawr in a pair of 7-a-side matches. The results were similarly impressive, with Team 1 winning 10-0 and Team 2 12-1. Annabelle W. and Lily R. were voted 'players of the match' by the opposition. All girls performed superbly well, playing some fantastic hockey and making some great tackles amongst all of the goals.
On Thursday 24th September a combined team of Year 10/11 girls played against Whitchurch High School. Howell’s went into the lead with a well timed goal from Kara C. towards the end of the first half. The second half was much tighter with Rosie T. scoring another goal for Howell’s but Whitchurch also managed to score two goals, tying the match at 2-2. The “player of the match” was Rosie T. Well done to all who played.
