Maths Week commenced on 21st November with the College Maths Prefects, Desirée W, Olivia D and Olivia M, giving an Assembly on ‘Maths in Art and Nature’. They informed us of the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci numbers that can be found in nature; for instance, the number of petals on a flower is often a Fibonacci number, as is the number of pairs of breeding rabbits. The staff in the Maths department and several students amused everyone by pretending to be rabbits and showing where the Fibonacci numbers arise. During the week, Year 7 were busy trying their hand at code breaking and during a lunchtime enjoyed creating 3D Bubble Shapes using straws, pipe-cleaners and lots of soapy water! They produced some amazing 3D bubbles. Year 8 showed their competitive side in their ‘Maths Relay Races’ and Year 7 rounded off the week having fun competing against staff and prefects in the ‘Set Challenge’ – a mathematical card game. An exciting week in the Maths Department!
