A GDST School

Howell's School is part of the GDST (Girls’ Day School Trust).

Today’s GDST schools build on 140 years of experience and expertise in educating girls, and remain as vibrant as they were at their inception, because innovation means renewal, seeking always to meet current needs, and not just aimless change.

The principles of a GDST education are simply stated, but are being put into practice in exciting and innovative ways in classrooms every day, across the GDST network of schools.

Two main dimensions

All-through schools

GDST Junior Schools are friendly and vibrant communities, giving young pupils the supportive and secure environment in which to grow and flourish as creative individuals. Creativity, curiosity and collaboration are valued and encouraged, and pupils move on to the next stage with real confidence. Girls move into the new world of the Senior School ready to meet its challenges. Their progress can be tracked and individual learning programmes developed. In the Sixth Form, pupils going through the UCAS process frequently express their appreciation for the fact that guidance and advice is being provided, and references written, by teachers who know them very well indeed.

Girls-only schools

Girls in girls-only schools benefit from the fact that everything is calibrated and designed to serve their educational needs. They are, of course, each individuals, and that’s the crucial thing, but experience suggests, and evidence confirms, that in girls-only classrooms the dynamic is different – with girls more likely to take intellectual risks, and adopt active roles; and in girls-only schools, subject choices are much less constrained by concerns about ‘image’ – mathematics and the sciences flourish at GDST schools.

The GDST is the leading network of independent girls’ schools in the UK, with nearly 4,000 staff, and 20,000 students between the ages of three and 18. As a charity that owns and runs a network of 23 schools and two academies in England and Wales, it reinvests all its income in its schools.
