Budding aircraft engineers were put through their paces at a special Aero Challenge held by Cardiff and Vale College this week. Held to mark National Science and Engineering Week, the competition is designed to give school pupils a taste of the various tasks involved in the aerospace engineering industry and to show the value of vocational education. On Tuesday 13th March, we took three teams of students to the College’s International Centre for Aerospace Training (ICAT) at Cardiff Airport for the Aero Challenge. The girls enjoyed a competitive day engaging in five tasks against the other teams from Howell's and teams from Cowbridge Comprehensive. There was a professional flight simulator task—having to land from 9 miles out at Cardiff Airport. Other tasks included jacking an aircraft for maintenance, and radio controlled model aircraft supply drops. The girls showed huge enthusiasm and determination and a great ability to compete and work cooperatively in teams. We had a great day out and would like to thank Jo Gower and her brilliant team at Cardiff and Vale College for a well organised and above all fun event.
