As part of the History Department's Franchise Fun Week to commemorate the centenary of women gaining the right to vote, on Wednesday 25th April the Senior School Debating Club took as its motion: 'Deeds, not Words': the Suffragettes were right to use violence against property in their campaign for votes for women.
It was a very lively debate with strong arguments on each side, but the Opposition just managed to win the day. Perhaps they were influenced by the unveiling the previous day of the statue of the famous Suffragist, Millicent Fawcett, in Parliament Square; she was resolutely opposed to any form of violence being used.
Well done to all those who took part, either by making a speech or raising Points of Information to challenge the speakers. Our confident, intelligent and articulate students are a tribute in themselves to all those who campaigned for greater rights for women.
