On Monday 19th March, eight Year 12 students took part in the regional European Youth Parliament held in the Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay. After an inspiring talk by Julie Morgan, AM, there followed debates on a wide range of issues: a European army; democracy in Catalonia; discrimination against the LGBTIQA+ community in the Chechen Republic; 'Brexit'; climate change; and finally what to do about tax evasion and tax havens.
While the Howell's team of Rachel S, Ellie K, Natasha S, Hanya E-G, Restam E-A, Dagmawi Y, Anoushka N and Ffion M formed the Committee on the Environment, advocating seven measures on climate change, they also took a full part in debates introduced by the other five committees before a closing address was given by Jenny Rathbone, AM. At the end of the day we were delighted to hear that the Howell's team has been selected to go through to the National European Youth Parliament at Liverpool Hope University this summer. Well done, team!
Year 13 student Ishrat C also played an important role in the event. As an alumna of last year's Summer Nationals, she acted as a Vice President, helping to chair the debates and ensure that procedures were followed correctly. While she was not involved in any way in the judging, she was very pleased with the outcome!
