On Monday 1st March 2021, Dydd Gwyl Dewi Sant, over 200 Prep School girls joined our first ever virtual Prep School Eisteddfod on Teams. Dressed in traditional Welsh costume, scarlet rugby shirts, national costumes of other cultures or house colours, the Prep School girls were proud to celebrate Wales and all things Welsh. After a virtual welcome from our Year 6 House Captains, different teachers introduced the huge range of creative activities that the girls had taken part in last week, both at home and in school. Foundation Phase classes had recorded a Welsh song in their music lessons and Key Stage 2 classes sang enthusiastically from their own homes, enthralling their younger audience with their expressive faces and dynamic actions! After a tough adjudication, girls who had submitted a recording for the Individual Instrumental Competition found out the results with the winners of the 6 sections having their video played. We heard a super harp solo from one of our school harpists and the girls were encouraged to move from their screens for a few seconds as they climbed a virtual Snowdon, jumped over waves at a virtual Rhossili beach or cycled round a virtual Caban Coch reservoir! The climax of the celebration was the pronouncement of the Bard. Having written an outstanding poem entitled The Amazing Amazon Rainforest, a fanfare sounded to welcome Alex P from Year 6 to the virtual Eisteddfod chair. What a wonderful event it was, very different to usual, but a real celebration of Welsh culture by a school that is very much gyda’n gilydd ond ar wahân – together but apart.
