Junior School Hockey News

It has been a busy start on the hockey field in the Junior School, with 7 matches taking place in the last two weeks. On Friday 29th September, two teams from Year 6 travelled to Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls for two fixtures. Despite the journey, the girls started quickly on both pitches, taking early leads thanks to good build-up play and excellent finishing in the attacking D. Team Purple were quick in moving the ball up the field throughout their game, with many goals coming from a number of different scorers. As the match went on, the girls began to make more effective use of the space and made it difficult for their opponents to come back. Well done to Team Purple (Hannah B, Issy C, Gabriella J, Keziah E, Lucy A, Lola M, Olivia W) who were victorious. Team Pink performed similarly well, getting the ball into the opponents’ D frequently. Jess C, Olivia T, Elin B, Grace C, Amber P, Emily T and Ella H also ran out winners and made a great start to their hockey season!

Monday 2nd October was the turn of Year 5, who took two teams to Rougemont School in Newport. Team Pink scored goals in each of the three periods to finish 3-0 winners. Carys M, Elizabeth J, Jess M, Bella C, Tilly M, Georgie H and Sophie D worked very well together, scoring some very well worked goals and making some very timely tackles in defence. Team Purple had a closer encounter on the second pitch, scoring a late goal to win 1-0. In what was the first game for many in nearly a year, the girls played very well to keep Rougemont out. Well played Mati D, Tallula C, Laila-May C, Alexa K, Evie P, Liana N and Sophia N-R!

Year 6 made their way to the National Hockey Centre on Wednesday 4th October to take on Cathedral School in three different matches. Team Pink started well and took an early lead before their opponents scored two very well worked goals. A late goal rescued a 2-2 draw for Team Pink (Olivia T, Emily T, Issy C, Hannah B, Ella H, Lucy A, Jess C, Bella D). On the other pitch, Team Purple encountered tough opposition and couldn’t prevent this CSL team from scoring three very good goals. The team of Carys H, Olivia W, Elin B, Aseel G, Gabriella J, Rose F, Daisy B, Lola M played well and showed lots of good examples of teamwork throughout their match. Team Navy finished off the afternoon with a hard-fought 1-0 victory thanks to a great performance and late goal from debutant Frankie J. It was also a first HSL hockey fixture for Lois B, Elizabeth R-J, and Ana J, who were guided well by Thandi N, Alberta G, Eleni S and Livi L in goal. Well done to all teams who played on Wednesday! We look forward to many more fixtures over the coming months.
