On Tuesday 9th February four teams from Howell's (Amy D and Edith B, Nayana K and Connie C, Angona and Aarona S and Frances D-T and Ayesha A) took part in the south Wales regional rounds of the Oxford Schools Debating Competition. The impromptu debates took the format of British Parliamentary, and each pair took part in two debates against 25 teams from independent and state schools across south wales. The first motion the teams debated was This house opposes the banning of controversial famous figures from social media. The rounds were closed so there were no results given, but with only 15 minutes to prepare, all the girls spoke excellently. The teams were lucky enough to receive useful feedback from the judges before their next closed round where they debated the motion This house regrets the glamorisation of start-up businesses. The quality of debate was very high again in this round with lots of engagement and clash between the two sides. All the debaters spoke excellently with Ayesha and Frances getting through to the Oxford final to debate against the other qualifiers from around the country. A huge achievement for all our debaters, new and experienced.
