Last Thursday, for our first ‘Poetry Chill’, girls took the opportunity to sit back, read poetry and relax with some chocolate as an added reward.
During January the girls in Poetry Club have looked at rhythm in poetry to prepare for this event. Connie had even thought about the connection between iambic pentameter and the sounds of a mother’s heartbeat in the womb. As well as writing some of their own rhythmic pieces, the poetry girls also chose poems with strong rhythm and rhyme to share in our first ‘Poetry Chill’.
A few of the thoughtful comments about the poems:
Shakespeare’s ‘Sonnet 18’ was my favourite because it is about nature and compares a person to nature. I think everyone has their own take on it, which gives it more freedom.
I loved ‘Leisure’ by William Henry Davies because of the rhyme, meaning and moral.
‘Invictus’ by William Ernest Henley: I loved this poem because it had a strong meaning about who you are and who you want to be.
'Invictus’ by William Ernest Henley: I liked this poem because it tells you to decide what you want to do and not let someone else decide. Although it’s quite short, it has a strong meaning.
‘My Bed is a Boat’ by Robert Louis Stevenson: I liked this one because it depicts what happens in a dream and when you awaken. I think the imagery was really good and triggered my imagination.
‘She Walks in Beauty’ by Lord Byron: I loved the imagery and ethereal quality of this poem.
