How much noise do 80 10-year-olds make? Rather a lot, if you get them all in the Great Hall and teach them how to use their voices to full effect. This month, Howell’s is joining forces again with the English-Speaking Union to host the annual Primary School Public Speaking Competition for children from local primary schools, which will take place on Tuesday 13th March. This year, we are delighted that Year 5 students from Baden Powell, Herbert Thompson, Howell’s, Kitchener, Lakeside, Lansdowne, Marlborough Road and Whitchurch Primary Schools in Cardiff are taking part.
In order to prepare the children for the competition, students from each school attended a public speaking workshop on Wednesday 7th March, led by Mr Walters and Mrs Yilmaz. The lively and engaging workshop taught the children about the different roles in a public speaking team, helping them develop confidence when talking to groups of people through a variety of tasks and games. During the workshop, a group of Year 9 girls from Howell's gave the children an insight into being part of a public speaking team. All the children took an active role in the workshop and were full of great energy and exciting ideas. At the end of the afternoon, every school was assigned a different topic to present at the competition, which will be held back at Howell's on Tuesday next week.
