We were very excited to have a special guest visit us on Tuesday 10th October, when a Lycra-clad Judy Murray bounced into school. Judy is best known for being mum to Wimbledon champions Jamie and Andy Murray, but she also holds 64 Scottish titles herself, has been a tennis coach for over 20 years and is internationally recognised as one of the world’s best skill developers in young players.
Judy believes there should be more female tennis stars, and she is keen to make the sport more welcoming and exciting for girls aged 5 – 8. During her morning at Howell's, she led her Miss Hits (https://miss-hits.co.uk/) workshop for all the girls in Year 2, along with Ellinore Lightbody from Tennis Wales. The Miss Hits mission is to introduce girls aged 5-8 to tennis in a fun, lively, all-girl environment where they can develop their coordination and get to know all the strokes.
She then led an elite masterclass for some of our top Senior School tennis players on the tennis courts, putting them thorough their paces and introducing them to the training skills she has used with her medal-winning sons.
All the girls had a really wonderful time, and are keen to get back on the courts again soon.
Evie O (Year 10): “I liked training in a new way and focusing on a different area of my game”
Megan C (Year 8): “I really enjoyed training with Judy Murray, as it was fun to train with such an experienced coach and it improved my game a lot.”
