Year 1 have been learning about the American scientist Linda Brown Buck.
They have shared some facts for everyone to enjoy:
Linda Brown Buck is a biologist. She won the Nobel Prize in 2004. She discovered odorant receptors. These are little things in your nose that smell a smell and then send messages to your brain. Your brain then works out what it is that you are smelling. If they aren’t working properly, you might smell a smell and think it is a different smell: you might think you can smell a roast dinner, when really it is chocolate.
The girls used their odorant receptors for a Science investigation. They blindly smelled some smells and had to guess what each of them was. Some of them were nice and some were very strong. They smelled peppermint, vanilla extract, coffee, lemon, vinegar and orange. Their favourites were orange, lemon and vanilla.
