The girls in Year 5 have been learning about spherical bodies in their science lessons this week and have been looking at comparative sizes and distance. They found out that the distance from the earth to the moon is 384,400 km and the distance from the earth to the Sun is 149.6 million km. As these distances are unimaginable, we used ratio to work this out in terms we could understand.
The sun was represented by a beach ball, the earth by a dried pea and our moon by a peppercorn. The moon was then 25cm away from the earth and the sun was 93m away from earth. We used the sports field and a trundle wheel to compare sizes and distances. We had a great time measuring trying to imagine what it would be like in space.
