Year 5’s trip to Brecon Mountain Railway and a very exciting sleepover

Year 5’s trip to Brecon Mountain Railway and a very exciting sleepover

On Thursday, we evacuated Year 5 to the countryside on the Brecon Mountain Railway as part of their World War 2 History studies. Students fully immersed themselves into the lifestyles of evacuees, wearing 1940s styles and singing popular wartime songs. They later returned to Hazelwood where they had a special sleepover, watching movies and eating pizza for their end-of-year treat.

Below is Lydia and Mai Van's summary of the trip to Brecon Mountain Railway:

For our school trip, we were pretending that we were evacuees for World War II as our topic is WWII. We went on a bus to a train station in the Brecon Beacons and ate lunch while we waited for the train to arrive. The train took a long time but it was worth it. It was a steam train that looked ancient but it was a fascinating contraption with wooden floorboards and benches.

1/5 of us went into a public carriage and were VIP’s (including us!). The rest of us went in a private carriage. We sang lots of songs such as: Run Rabbit Run, Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye, We’ll Meet Again and There’ll Be Bluebirds Over The White Cliffs Of Dover. The scenery was magnificent with crystal clear reservoirs, sky-scraping trees and steep, rocky mountains. It was all going fine until the sweltering heat and a massive fly came in. Luckily, Mr Cheek was able to get rid of the nasty creature, but unfortunately Mr Cheek could not get rid of the heat as well, but thanks Mr Cheek anyway. On the way back, it was even hotter than before and everyone was pleading to get off the train to go to the playground. In the playground, it was also boiling but not as much as it was in the train. I think it will be an experience that we will not forget.

Below is Anusha and Ava's summary of the sleepover:

We started off the sleepover by watching a movie called Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the movie was very entertaining! Halfway through the movie, we went into the playground to get some fresh air by running around in the tennis court... we've never been to the playground at 8.45 pm before! Then we went to our classrooms and laid out our sleeping bags and pillows for the night. After that, we settled down and we went to sleep. We all went to bed extremely late and woke up quite early. Every girl in Year 5 enjoyed the sleepover!
