On 17th September, Year 13 were fortunate enough to watch a live streaming of Benedict Andrews’ production of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ , which was an utterly compelling adaptation of the original drama written by Tennessee Williams. Other than the outstanding performance from Gillian Anderson as Blanche, the ingenious staging certainly played a key role in making the play the success that it was. The cleverly designed stage revolved throughout the play to ensure that no one in the audience missed out on any aspect of the production, and the apartment without walls gave us the impression that we were eavesdropping on something mysterious and secretive.
As a whole, the characterization was excellent and you could tell how convincing the characters were in the curtain call, when the actors and actresses were almost unrecognisable, if it had not been for the costumes. It was also interesting to see how the actors could keep in character on stage throughout set changes and even when the stage was constantly moving. This gave a more realistic interpretation of the play where it seemed that only the characters on stage existed.
