STEM Club members have been participating in the “I’m a Scientist Get Me Out of Here” competition, an online event where school students meet and interact with scientists. It is an X Factor-style competition between scientists, in which the students are the judges. Students can ask the scientists anything they want, and vote for their favourite scientist to win a prize of £500 to communicate his or her work with the public
The students have been asking a group of scientists who specialise in “Extreme Temperatures” questions over the past week and have taken part in a live chat with them. The winner was a female scientist who works on various different projects but all are about the development of materials. She has previously looked at old tooth samples from an archaeological dig to try and understand how the structure of our teeth changes as we grow up. She has investigated liquid metals, trying to change their properties for different needs and is currently looking at some that can be used as bone replacements.
