On Wednesday, 26th November, Year 7 students braved the cold but dry weather at Cosmeston Medieval Village and Caerphilly Castle. At Cosmeston, they were given a tour of the buildings, heard all the medieval gossip and baked bread with Elspeth, wife of Thomas the wood turner, and were introduced to weapons and armour by Henry Hogg, the village swineherd. After lunch, they moved on to Caerphilly Castle, where they saw the re-created siege engines, explored the castle defences and were given instruction in correct mealtime etiquette by one of Hugh Despenser's household servants. The girls responded enthusiastically to the various roles they were asked to adopt, clearly enjoying the opportunity to 'live' history.
