Year 4 Roman Caerleon trip

Year 4 visited the impressive Roman remains at Caerleon on Tuesday. Despite the cold, wet and blustery weather, they ventured through time and entered the Roman Fort that had once stood on that site thousands of years ago….  They began the trip in the museum where they impressed the staff with their knowledge of the Romans. Next, they experienced life in the bare Legionary barracks, trying on armour and exploring objects that would have been used by the Legionaries. Afterwards, Year 4 were whisked off to experience a Roman school. Dressed in fine togas and pallas, they experienced counting and reading as a school boy or girl.
After a peaceful lunch, they walked across the town to visit to the amphitheatre and barracks, stopping en route to explore the beautiful bath houses. There is a lot of stone left of the amphitheatre, enabling them to see the shape of the building and even to imagine how the gladiators must have felt as they walked through the gateway into the arena.
What a wonderful day they had, soaking up the history and putting their classroom learning into context!
