Mrs Sully was delighted to welcome the Argentinian son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter of a former Hywelian on a visit to school on 10th May. Meirionwen Pughe was born in Patagonia in 1913 to a couple from North Wales who had emigrated there the previous year. She was sent to Howell’s School in 1925 (she had an uncle in Caerphilly) and was in Tredegar House, which meant that she boarded in the main school building. Meirionwen left Howell’s in July 1928 to return to Patagonia. She married Curwen Morris, whose Welsh family had settled in Argentina, in 1935. On her descendants’ visit to school, her eldest son kindly donated a CDRom telling the story of the Welsh settlers in Patagonia and the Buenos Aires area, and in particular the story of his family. He is establishing a Welsh village to the memory of the early settlers. The three visitors had a tour of the school and were able to see Meirionwen’s name in the Admissions Register and in school magazines.
