Earlier this year the Year 12 and 13 German students were invited to participate in an annual essay-writing competition, organised by the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association and open to all secondary schools in the Cardiff area. Students were asked to submit a 250-word essay. They were provided with the opening lines of a story, and they were tasked with developing the story in any way they wished.
The competition is now in its fifth year and Howell’s students have once again scooped the winning prizes. The competition was won last year by Nikita C., writing about sport and in 2012 by Clara G. who wrote about her favourite German film – Barfuß (Bare-foot). It was won by Harriet T. in 2011, who wrote about a visit to Germany and in 2010 by Robert V. who wrote the winning essay about his experiences of learning German.
This year we were delighted that Lucy T. (Year 12) was awarded £100 for her winning entry. The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Cardiff presided over the award ceremony on Thursday 10th April 2014 at City Hall. Grace B. (Year 13) won £50 as runner-up and all the participants were awarded a certificate, messenger bag and book.
