Hot on the heels of the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday, all students in Year 7 experienced their own Eurovision at HSL on Monday 12th of May. The event was hosted by the Languages Department, and featured activities and competitions using French, German, Welsh and Spanish. The girls were split into teams at random and each team became a country. In the Howell’s competition Austria (very aptly!) won the multilingual Eurovision general knowledge quiz, ably led by Isobel M, and Germany, led by Janelle B, won the extremely difficult Pictionary competition, where each word had to be translated into four languages in order to achieve maximum marks. Fortunately none of our countries scored ‘nul points’. Part of the event involved learning the lyrics to a special Howell’s version of Abba’s Eurovision hit, Waterloo, in five languages and making a video! The Year 7s had a fantastic time and really threw themselves into all the activities. There was also an array of interesting 1970s style accessories, featuring lots of sparkle and flowers! A special thank you goes to the Year 13 language prefects who came up with the idea for the event and then put it all together. It was lovely to see students from Year 7 and Year 13 working together and having fun.
This was the final activity for the Year 13 languages prefects, who go on study leave this week. During the year they have undertaken a variety of activities with students across the school, including the Spelling Bee, workshops, assemblies, charity netball and language clubs. We have been so fortunate to have had such a hardworking and enthusiastic group of students.
