We hosted the Wales Regional Round of the World Scholars Cup 2024

On 2nd and 3rd April, Howell’s hosted the Wales Regional Round of the World Scholar's Cup 2024. This annual, global, competition sees teams of students studying a broad and varied curriculum, then competing in quizzes, debates and a writing challenge all based on the topics studied. This year, teams from Howell’s competed at the Regional Round against other Welsh students as well as teams from English schools and some who had travelled from Paris to compete! It was an interesting and enjoyable two days of competition with debates including “Should we make AI copies of our friends?” and “Everyone should be allowed to ctrl-z one decision every day”.

Against tough, international competition, our Howell’s teams were incredibly successful, with every student winning at least one medal, and some as many as eight or nine. We are proud to share that our teams occupied six out of the top ten places! Charlotte H-H and Gisella B both featured in the showcase debate and Josey K was chosen as a judge in recognition of their exceptional performances in the debating rounds (coming 3rd, 7th and 9th respectively). Five of our students featured in the top 10 individual overall scholars: Charlotte H-H (4th), Gisella B (7th), Elodie W (8th), Emma H (9th), and Abbie Spiers (10th) and two teams received trophies coming second (Gisella, Abbie and Saee) and third (Charlotte, Emma and Lydia) overall. Other notable team performances were Lisa G and Hana ML who came third in the senior scholar’s bowl and Sofia W, Elodie W and Suvira K who came second in the junior bowl. In individual events, Eva W, Zara S-B, Saee B, Charlotte H-H and Evangeline C-T took 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th places in the scholar’s challenge and Charlotte came 6th in the collaborative writing.
