UK Linguistics Olympiad 2016

During the first week in February we challenged our students to compete in the UK Linguistics Olympiad. This is an annual competition which attracts thousands of entrants from across the UK. At advanced level the entries are sent off for marking and results are issued later this month and the most successful entrants are then invited to a further round. This year we had 28 students in Years 12 and 13 who sat the gruelling 2½ hour examination. At KS3 and KS4, students completed the linguistic challenges in their language lessons. The tasks involved students using their knowledge of how languages are put together, as well as their problem-solving skills, in order to unravel grammatical questions and translate simple sentences in a range of languages including Estonian, Irish, Amele (Papua New Guinea) and Kaqchikel (Guatemala). The students worked very hard on these tasks and the following students reached the required thresholds to achieve an award. Certificates will be presented in assembly. Well done to:
