In assembly this week, the Eco team raised awareness for Spring Watch. Students were engaged in identifying common birds, animals and insects which are beneficial to our garden environment and to the wider ecosystem and how to encourage and facilitate their number. Students were also reminded that if they do not already, then now is a great time to put food and water out for birds in their own garden and to consider doing a bird survey to count the number and diversity. Hedgehogs are also under threat with their numbers declining, so we informed the students how important it is to have gardens which are habitat friendly (a composter area, small piles of wood and leaves or even make your own hedgehog house). As hedgehogs like to roam, consider designing small gaps in your fencing or hedging to allow their movement. The assembly also highlighted how important it is to help encourage pollinators into our gardens by growing particular flowers.
