English Department News June 2018

Congratulations go to Elin S. (Year 13) who was Highly Commended in this Year's Laurie Magnus GDST Poetry Competition. Her poem, Outvoted, was selected as one of the winning poems in our Eisteddfod earlier this year. We hope that Elin is having a relaxing summer after her A level examinations and wish her every success in the future. Keep writing, Elin!

Outvoted
Canaries kept in cages
with their feathers tied tightly
to the bombs they made.
Finally proving their worth
by showing the strength of their wings.
The yellow of their skin
is the colour of the sign and sash
slung across a suffragette’s back.
So just how they were used in coal mines,
these birds saved the lives of our front lines.
They fought not for land or weaponry
but respect, recognition and dignity.
And still we hear the canary’s song
Rejoicing, singing on and on.
