We send thanks to Anna H, Erin B, Lydia P and Grace B-E from Year 11 and Erin T from Year 13 who, over the past week, have presented Go Green Section assemblies for Senior School and College respectively. During these presentations, they have shone a spotlight on Howell’s chosen environmental charity The Size of Wales and have informed students on the charity’s global aims and goals regarding carbon sequestration through sustainable tree planting and their environmental education programs which aim to reverse environmental decline within the countries where they operate.
Lydia and Anna have also worked collaboratively with other Year 11 Senior Leaders to deliver an end of term Senior School assembly which has focused on our chosen environmental charity for Go Green Day, highlighted the forthcoming global COP26 summit in Glasgow and introduced the Transform Our World Youth Summit.
We eagerly await the COP26 summit, which takes place in Glasgow between 31st October and November 12th where delegates from around the world will meet to discuss how countries can come together collectively on a global common purpose to address climate change. It is recognised that as momentous as Paris COP was, countries must go much further than they did even at that historic summit in order to keep the hope of holding temperature rise to 1.5oC. COP26 will need to be decisive, in order to avoid global temperatures rising above this potential tipping point, but we also as individuals need to look to what actions we can do to have a positive impact on our environment. The steps we can take every day and our willingness to embrace decarbonisation strategies will all add up and will help support our nation to reach our target of net zero carbon emission by 2050.
