On the afternoon of Saturday 23rd April, the London branch of the Hywelian Guild held their annual AGM and Afternoon Tea in the very special surroundings of the Drapers’ Hall, London. Memories were shared and lots of laughter could be heard as everyone tucked into a delicious tea which was enjoyed by all. Hannah Roberts (Howell’s Engagement Officer) and Sue Thomas (Chair of Howell’s School Governing Board and Hywelian) shared tales of current life in Howell’s. It was lovely that alumna and Latin and Science teacher Ellie Jenkins also attended the event. Many thanks to Diana Paul (Class of 1962) and Rosemary Satchell (Class of 1953) for organising such a lovely afternoon.
Howell’s enjoys a long association with the Drapers’ Company. When cloth merchant Thomas Howell died in the 16th century he entrusted 12,000 ducats to the Drapers’ Company for the support of orphan maidens. Carefully invested in city property, that legacy returned enough to found Howell’s which opened in 1860 and today provides bursaries, a hardship fund, leaving scholarships and care for the school’s historic buildings. We are extremely grateful to the Drapers’ Company for its unstinting support.
