On the afternoon of Saturday 13th April, the London branch of the Hywelian Guild gathered for their annual AGM and Afternoon Tea at the prestigious Drapers’ Hall, nestled in the heart of the city of London. Laughter filled the air as cherished memories were exchanged over delicious treats, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for all.
Rachel Eling, Howell’s Director of Marketing and Communications who is also a Hywelian, regaled the gathering with tales of current life at Howell’s, adding to the camaraderie of the event. It was a lovely that Ellie Jenkins, an alumna who now teaches Latin and Science at Howell’s, attended the event along with Cordelia Jervis, Secretary of the Hywelian Guild.
Many thanks to alumnae Diana Paul and Rosemary Satchell for organising such a splendid afternoon. During the AGM, Diana and Rosemary shared their decision to step down from their roles as Secretary and Treasurer respectively, opening up the opportunity for new members to contribute to the London branch's success. Their dedication and efforts over many years were acknowledged with sincere appreciation by everyone, and it is hoped that fellow Hywelians will step forward to carry on their legacy. If anyone is interested in taking either of the roles, please email Hannah Roberts at hywelians@how.gdst.net or telephone 029 2026 1825.
The bond between Howell’s and the Drapers’ Company is steeped in history, dating back to the 16th century when Thomas Howell’s generous endowment supported orphan maidens through the Drapers’ Company. This legacy paved the way for the establishment of Howell’s in 1860, continuing to benefit generations through bursaries, scholarships, as well as the preservation of the school’s historic buildings. Everyone at Howell’s is extremely grateful to the Drapers’ Company for their unwavering support.
