On Wednesday 26th September, everyone at Howell's was in a sporty frame of mind. Preparations for the official opening of our new sports facilities, including the new tennis courts, astro pitch and sports pavilion, began in earnest at the start of term, and Mrs Crawford, Director of Sport had a spectacular celebration of our sporting talent in store for the invited guests.
Parents and VIPs filled the sports hall, and on the dot of 2.30pm some of our dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, hockey and netball champions performed in a fantastic choreographed display. Speeches came from Mrs Davis, Mr Read, Mrs Yilmaz, Mrs Sue Thomas and our guest of honour, Olympic sprinter and BBC Sports Coach of the Year Christian Malcolm, who talked about the passion that he has for encouraging young people, of all abilities, to get involved in sport.
Eagerly waiting on the the pitch during the speeches, students from Reception to Year 11 were assembled and ready, keen to perform their massed warm-up dance routine, admirably choreographed by Miss Batchelor and Mrs Manning. Watching the several hundred girls from the balcony of the pavilion were invited guests including friends, governors, alumni donors as well as numerous people who had been so influential with the project. As the girls' dance drew to a close, Christian Malcolm raised the scissors and with a quick SNIP, the new Sports Complex was officially open!
Congratulations to all the girls who took part in the opening ceremony, it was a wonderful day and we felt very proud of you all.
