On Tuesday 13th March, Louise S and Dagmawi (both Year 12) travelled to Trinity College, Oxford for the two-day McWhirter Conference. The conference encourages students to think about their own role in society and to consider how they might get involved in shaping Britain's future. Louise and Dagmawi's report on the conference can be read below:
Economic Wealth = Social Wellbeing? is a very contemporary and diverse topic, one that we have really enjoyed exploring and looking at from different perspectives. We had the opportunity to discuss and challenge the ideologies surrounding it with students from a number of schools across England and Wales. With the other students and leading academics we explored the balance between the responsibilities of the state and the individual and reflected upon the controversial opinions presented. This was an invaluable experience; working with other young people and further developing self-confidence and communication skills in a debating environment, as well as making contacts and having the chance to use the facilities at Oxford University. We both really enjoyed working within a close community.
